How to Install Floor Tile

Tools needed:

Step 1

The first step is to determine the layout of the tile. For example, an entry floor would not use a small cut at the door. Start with a full piece of tile at the door and lay tile down across the room with spacers in between. For example, if a 12" tile ends up with anything over 6" at the far side, it will look fine. Anything less then 6" at far side, add 6" to the size of the tile, divide by 2 and start with that size piece against the door. Repeat this process from left to right as well. This creates a layout that will avoid sliver cuts.

Step 2

Mix thin set and let stand for about 5 minutes.

Step 3

Start applying thin set in the corner and work across the width of the room. Start with a cut piece that was determined by the layout above. Remember to put cut edges facing out. Use plastic spacers to keep the tiles straight.

Step 4

Place tile in a stair step pattern, only spreading as much thin set as you can reach at a time. Put a straight edge across the tile every few rows to make sure it is running straight.

Step 5

Make cuts against walls and continue to keep tile leveled out. When done allow to dry overnight. Now the tile is ready to grout (see grouting tutorial).
